THE SWEATSHIRT

An old classic given a very modern makeover

A few years ago, it's something that outside the gym, I would never have considered wearing, but recently, the sweatshirt has become something of a modern wardrobe staple. It's an item men are familiar with, a classic, something immediately accepted as comforting and reassuring, and with its minimal silhouette, a host of designers from Margiela to Doriani have made this once humble classic a luxury item. In its new guise, it's suitable for anything from the office, to drinks and dinner. I for one have had my eyes opened to this much loved casual staple, and the loose comfortable silhouette can add contemporary relevance to more traditional men’s tailoring.

These loopback cotton sweatshirts by Paul Smith were inspired by the style of "The Doors" frontman Jim Morrison and the effortlessly cool Californian style of the period. As well as keeping the authentic look of the sweatshirt, the graphic print adds a modern twist. Wearing under a trench or topcoat will bring a relaxed air to more tailored pieces.
